About The Hellenic Initiative Australia

The Hellenic Initiative Australia (THI Australia) is part of a worldwide not-for-profit movement aimed at uniting and empowering the Greek diaspora and philhellenes to assist Greece in its long term economic and social recovery. The KAV is proud to support THI initiatives, particularly through their 'The Tipping Point' program.

Since 2015, THI Australia has awarded AU$1.5 million in grants to 11 trusted partner charities in Greece delivering programs across four streams - health, social services, education and employment pathways. A further AU$800,000 in-kind support has enabled twenty-six young Greek graduates to participate in THI Australia's successful Internship Program.

The Hellenic Initiative was founded in 2012 by Andrew N Liveris AO (former CEO & Chairman of Dow Chemical Company, and 2021 Kastellorizian of the Year) and leading members of the global Greek diaspora who felt compelled to respond to the economic and social crisis in Greece.

Former US President Bill Clinton is THI’s Patron. This year it celebrates its 10 year anniversary.

Collectively, THI chapters in Australia, Canada, the USA, and the UK, have committed US$6 million in crisis relief and US$10.7 million in economic and entrepreneurial development.

THI Australia has partnered with eleven outstanding NGOs in Greece to provide immediate relief to Greece and its people since 2014.

From food saving programs and outreach services assisting the homeless in Athens, to the delivery of life-saving hospital equipment for children and medical care to remote and island communities, and education programs for remote and rural communities, the far-reaching programs being supported by THI Australia are making a lasting impact on Greek society.

A grant agreement is prepared for each grant awarded by THI Australia to a partner charity and the reporting requirements includes agreed benchmarks, periodic reporting on program activities and marketing material. budget of receipts on approved expenditure and a completion report at the conclusion of the grant. The charities are also required to provide THI Australia with frequent testimonials throughout the grant period.

THI Australia is a registered charity in Australia with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status and the Board comprises fifteen volunteer directors from the major Australian capital cities.
